The gladiators were imprisoned fighters, forced to combat each other in the gladiator pit by the Pit-Master and his Craglings . Apparently, one would've been granted freedom after 200 straight wins in the pit, although it's unknown if the Pit-Master would've kept his promise. They were all eventually freed by Jay . .
